HTC Thunderbolts

the HTC Thunderbolt, is the fastest Internet phone ever, and it wins our Editors' Choice for the top touchscreen srnartphone . though inevitably it does have a few shortcomings—most notably with regard to battery life., so you'll need to bring a spare.

At 6.4 ounces, the Thunderbolt looks and feels huge, but it's classy looking. The phone's design is quite simple. It features a power button and a headphone jack at the top, a volume rocker on the right spine, and the standard Home, Menu, Back, and Search buttons or the face of the device. There's a small 1.3-megapixel camera next to the earpiece, and a larger 8-megapixel shooter on the back, along with a kickstand, so you can prop the phone up on a table or a desk.

To its credit, the phone makes good use of its size. When you're on the go, the ThunderBolt's 4.3-inch WVGA screen gives you ample room to maneuver your fincers while touch-typing and navigating Websites. Upload and download speeds were incredible; The ThunderBolt's biggest draw is its broadband speeds,  consistent download speeds of between 8 megabits per second and 12 mbps.

HTC has thrown in a few nifty new features as well. For instance, dragging down the notification bar at the top of the screen reveals a list of applications that you've previously opened, providing another avenue for managing your open apps.

The radios in 4G devices demand far more power than the ones in 3G phones do, simply because they pull and push so much more data from and to the network. Also, if you leave your device's 4G setting on, the phone will constantly look for a 4G network to connect to. The best way to alleviate the problem is to use 'iG only when you're in an area that supports it.

the ThunderBolt  a great piece of hardware, especially for users who routinely run various high-bandwidth applications such as video chat, online gaming, and high-definition video streaming. If you need a lightning-fast phone and don't mind paying a premium, the Thunderbolt is for you. Just make sure to buy a second battery.

HTC Mozart

HTC smartphones are uniformly well-built, slick and have excellent interfaces. However, they often look similar to each other.

Another of HTC's of familiar Windows Phone 7 devices, the Mozart places its faith in its 8-megapixel camera  with a Xenon flash , autofocus and a range of scene presets. and a set of decent built-in speakers. Video can be recorded at the standard 720p and stored on the 8GB internal memory. Clad in a steel-looking gunmetal surround, the Mozart shows a sober face to the world.

On its reverse is an asymme:ric two-tone metal backplate. We're reserving judgment on its styling. It has a 3.7in screen with a resolution of480 x 800, in general operation is just as slick as its stablemates, and we like the phone's soft curves.

Primed with a 1GHz processor, the Mozart is extremely nippy. An upwards swipe unlocks the home screen and takes you to the main Windows Phone 7 interface.

Motorola Defy

The Motorola Defy is a very well-built Android 2.1 Eclair handset that, like the iPhone, A lovely screen and rugged design go hand in hand with a very reasonable price, but isn't of the battery-draining, super-bright AmoLED type seen on the Nexus S.

Motorola's latest model has a lovely 3.7in, 480 x 854 capacitive screen - that's a higher resolution than the giant HTC Desire HD - and a lot more besides. If the screen doesn't catch your eye, the unusual design certainly will. With its exposed screw heads and grippy plastic chassis, The Defy is water-, dust- and scratch-resistant. a rubber-sealed battery compartment and impact- and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass on the front.

Motorola adds its MotoBlur social-media interface - a feature not everyone will appreciate. To set up MotoBlur you create a dedicated account that will become your one-stop login for Facebook, Last.fm, Twitter, MySpace, grouping together contacts and contact images, updates, feeds and more. It lets you post to many services simultaneously, and the resizable Motoblur widgets for the Android desktop are as slick as anything you'll see on an HTC handset.

One useful feature you can enable is the Data Saver. This automatically queues photos for upload for when a fast web connection is available, and prevents photos and video embedded in web pages from downloading where coverage is an issue.

Aside from that, the Defy has a decent 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash, It has good battery life, with an admirable 60% left on the meter after 24 hours of testing.
